The Fundamental Problem With Social Media

I'm sure you've heard that the U.S. dollar was detached from Gold. Meaning, the green paper we use as money is just an idea, or a trust system, not actually backed by any real form of value.

That's overly simplistic, but stay with me.

The same thing has happened with "followers" and "subscribers" on social media sites like Instagram, X, Linkedin, Youtube, etc.

Here's what I mean...

I've got almost 10,000 "followers" on X (Twitter) but if I make a post, how many people will actually see it?

Should be about 10,000 right? Everyone who clicked the "follow" button in agreement that they want to hear from me. But that's not at all how it works anymore.

And hasn't for a long time now.

The real answer is "it depends."

Not on how many followers I have, but on an algorithm that you or I never agreed to or opted-in too. Boo hooo, not complaining, it's part of the game.

If I want to reach my followers, I need to create content good enough (70% watch rate, 5% CTR, 2:1 bookmark to likes, etc) for the algorithm to send my content to my followers - and possibly many others as well.

Ok here's my point...

Today everyone is obsessed over how many followers someone has, but that actually doesn't even matter. It's just pure vanity.

I gave up on it, and instead just started optimizing for views instead. Which, if you think about it, is really what we want anyway.

We want people to see our messages and links, so they opt-in and buy.

When I gave up this vane idea of trying to get more followers, and optimizing instead for views, all of a sudden my view counts grew and grew and grew.

That's how I have over 500,000 views on @swordandsolas (Youtube) but less than 5,000 followers. Which sounds so bass ackwards.

Over 1mil a month on Instagram.

So...

Does that make me a fraud?

Or ahead of the curve.
